Salon Tipping Etiquette

Salon Tipping Etiquette

“The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.” -Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point

Tipping can be considered the ultimate conundrum. Traditionally tips have shown appreciation, but today workers rely on tips as part of their salary. According to COSMO, “tips are a hundred percent up to your own discretion. While tips are absolutely encouraged, they aren’t exactly mandatory.”

Etiquette suggests tips range between 15-20% when dining out; Stopping at the bar for cocktails and apps or an afternoon pick-me-up from the barista? You guessed it, 20%!

Not good with numbers? Here is an RM ‘How To’ TIP… Find the total on your bill, move the decimal point to the left one place, round up, double that number. Voila, 20%!

The etiquette for salon service tipping goes something like this:

    1. Tipping your RM stylist or colorist is an extension of gratitude for their services; As a general rule, consider a 20% gratuity of the service fee.
    2. Extended Services: If you spend more than 3 hours on processing or treatments, consider tipping closer to 25%.
    3. Bang Trim: If your stylist doesn’t charge for bang maintenance, etiquette suggests a $10 – $20 tip is appropriate.
    4. Salon Assistants: From shampoo to blow dries, salon assistants are the heart and soul of a salon; recommended is a $5 – $10 gratuity.
    5. Holidays: Spread a bit of holiday cheer with a thank-you for salon services- etiquette suggests 30% instead of the traditional 20%.

Cash is always appreciated, don’t forget to stop by the ATM before your appointment!

To Sleep with Wet Hair or Not?

To Sleep with Wet Hair or Not?

When gym days and hair wash days don’t line up with one’s social calendar, we have no alternative but to resort to extreme circumstances. However, there’s still NO reason to go to bed with WET hair! The old wives’ tale about sleeping with damp hair that leads to sniffles is folklore, but sleeping with hair that’s soaking will cause fungal infections and hair breakage!

Damp hair in bed is harmful. Hair is vulnerable when it’s wet and grows prone to damage overnight. So unless you’re masking, there are more cons to sleeping with hair less than 70% dry.

A damp and moist pillow is an ideal environment for yeast and fungus to thrive. A study from the European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology identified 4 to 16 species of fungal flora per pillow tested. “Along with the fungus naturally present on your scalp, pillows are also a hotbed for fungus. It thrives in a warm environment, and a wet pillowcase and pillow provide the ideal breeding ground.” –Healthline

Here are some moves you can make if you MUST sleep with wet hair:

      1. Use CONDITIONER to seal hair cuticles.
      2. Reduce water absorption by applying COCONUT OIL to your ends.
      3. Rest your head on a SILK PILLOWCASE for frictionless sleep.

“Your hair is still wet!”

THE Hair Trend of 2022

THE Hair Trend of 2022

Gray Hair, Don’t Care!

The hair trend to keep an eye on in 2022 has gone gray, and we are here for it. From Jamie Lee Curtis to Jane Fonda and Andie MacDowell to Jodie Foster, the silver fox look turned heads on the red carpet at Cannes this year.

The trend is as chic as it gets, even Miranda has gone gray in SATC, and the look is not just raising eyebrows- it is dying them… GRAY!

Embracing your graying locks and aging skin is part of the YOU revolution that is challenging the norms of what it means to be young. Women and men alike are choosing to enhance their natural gray and opting for hair to gray naturally, even camouflaging roots with highlights and lowlights to blend the gray.

This trend has bled into the young culture with the hashtag #greyhairdontcare trending. Whether inspired by glamorous A-list stars like Lady Gaga, who donnés those ‘Granny Grays’ from time to time, this phenomenon has younger women coloring their locks gray and defying the misnomer that GRAY = OLD.

Red Market’s acclaimed colorists on Miami Beach LIVE for this color blending technique; A long but worthwhile process- it can sometimes take up to 6 hours to achieve your perfect shade of gray. “Going gray is a lot of fun. It requires so much time and in that time I really establish a great connection with my client. We become good friends after a service like this one which requires trust and patience.” -Miguel Vargas”

Just remember, those aren’t gray hairs- they are strands of glitter!

Must Have Deep Conditioners for Fine Hair

Must Have Deep Conditioners for Fine Hair

Natural oils have treated hair throughout the centuries; but, in the 1800s Édouard Pinaud formulated Brilliantine. Developed for men’s beards, Brilliantine was the framework for the conditioner we use today.

Shampoos clean sweat and dead skin cells from your scalp, while conditioners work to deliver softer hair and protect from friction between strands. Supercharged deep conditioners boost the overall vitality as the treatments penetrate the hair shaft to enrich hair with moisture.

Top 3 Deep Conditioners:

  1. Kérastase – Resistance Mask for Damaged Hair

Kérastase’s Resistance Mask repairs and provides deep nourishment for weak and damaged hair; while shielding strands against breakage. Formulated with Native Plant Cells and Gluco Peptides, the Resistance Mask enters the hair cuticle and strengthens the root to stimulate growth. A little goes a long way, so apply the mask to wet hair and leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing.

  1. OUAI Treatment Masque

Ready for the ultimate treatment mask? Yes, OUAI! Designed with artichoke leaf extract, this mask hydrates and repairs damage to fine hair. OUAI’s reputation shines through this mask, with conditioning damage control that mends split ends and prevents color from fading. It is a GOAT of treatment masks.

  1. OLAPLEX No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner

OLAPLEX is world-renowned for restoring damaged hair; whether environmental or thermal factors were the cause, OLAPPLEX’s chemical breakdown works at pairing with the single sulfur hydrogen bond faster than the three oxygen molecules can. No matter your hair type, the No.5 conditioner infuses moisture into strands.

We would be remiss if we forget to mention, RM’s top stylists on Miami Beach suggest ONLY using deep conditioning treatments 2-4 times per month.

Take your dreams and your conditioner choice seriously!

Going Blonde: What You Need to Know Before Bleaching

Going Blonde: What You Need to Know Before Bleaching

That age-old tale, do blondes have more fun? Our favorite RM influencers seem to think so…

“Going lighter has given me life! It adds a youthful appearance to my skin and since my hair can be oily, it reduces the oils allowing me to use less dry shampoo”

Here are the facts behind those fun in the sun rumors! As we spend our summer days outdoors, our hair goes through a process called photobleaching. That’s when the melanin pigment in our hair breaks down and fades color the more it’s exposed to sunlight.

Our friends at COSMO speak the truth, “Bleached hair is synonymous with dry, brittle hair. There’s no other way to go about it-” The key to post- Summer success is enhancing that natural process to achieve custom blonde locks, and Red Market’s top colorists are renowned for doing just that!

RM’s Facts on Going Blonde:

  1. Invest in the Compromise:
Going blonde is a meticulous process, which can strip your hair if not done by trained colorists. To avoid further compromising your hair, NEVER bleach freshly washed hair and invest time in hydrating treatments, like applying conditioning masks to help heal your locks.
  1. Maintenance is Key:
Unless you are diving into the deep end of platinum, our RM colorists will allow your roots to grow naturally, followed by routine color services to achieve your perfect blonde. Going blonde is ALWAYS a work in progress!
  2. Never Go Light Without a Great Cut:

New do, new you! A fabulous cut energizes hair follicles on color-treated hair, which can suffer sufficient moisture loss during the bleaching process. RM’s top hairstylists also suggest limiting damage from heat styling, like blow-drying and ironing daily to keep color-treated hair healthy.

RM Insider wants to caution you that going blonde is not one size fits all, and achieving your golden dreams takes time. Estimate leaving six to eight weeks between color treatments and always Keep Calm as You Go Blonde!

Clarifying Shampoos

Clarifying Shampoos

Clarifying shampoos free your hair of residue and toxic buildup that oils and styling products leave behind. If you feel your hair looks a bit dull and lifeless, bring in backup. Designed to deep-clean the hair and scalp, they have a reputation for stripping hair, so use caution. A good rule of thumb is to use a clarifying shampoo when needed, at max once every month. If you are color-treating your hair, consult with your RM concierge before using any clarifying products that may adversely affect your color.

RM’s Top 5 Clarifying Shampoos:

  1. Oribe the Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo
Oribe’s Clarifying Shampoo is a clarifying mouse formulated with volcanic ash and sea kelp extract that not only lathers your locks but eliminates buildup.

  1. Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo
Moroccanoil is a cult favorite, and the clarifying shampoo does not disappoint. The shampoo’s profound cleaning powers curated with argan and avocado oil restore a healthy balance to your scalp.

  1. R+Co OBLIVION Clarifying Shampoo
OBLIVION is OBVIOUSLY amazing! Sicilian lemon, eucalyptus, green tea, and rosemary leaf extract burst in this R+Co clarifying shampoo to remove residue and build-up in the roots of our hair caused by environmental elements and styling products.

  1. OUAI Detox Shampoo
Are you looking for a fresh start? OUAI’s Detox formula detoxifies your scalp with apple cider vinegar to cleanse away dirt, oil, and impurities. OUAI’s secret ingredient is keratin, which restores hair simultaneously.

  1. Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo
Here’s your chance to COME CLEAN. Kinky-Curly’s exclusive blend of mandarin orange extract cleans your hair and scalp build-up while removing and preventing the future accumulation of hard water minerals in your hair.
Clarify your hair so healthy it shines!

The Evolution of Hair Braiding

Braids have come a long way since those tight pigtails from childhood. They have actually evolved into a sleek and grown-up way to contain long hair in a neat and professional manner. Not only are they a diverse and convenient choice, they are also one of the oldest hairstyles documented in history. This week Red Market Salon follows the evolution of hair braiding from Africa, to Europe, and beyond. The roots of braiding have been traced to West Africa where it began as a symbolic art form to denote culture, status, and tribe. Bridal up-dos with braids were considered the most complex forms, complete with intricate patterns and hair weaving. As with many ancient cultures, elders pass on knowledge to younger generations, and braiding was no exception. It was a very social tradition, with styles and techniques taught through the ages.

English braid

Traditional or English braid (LifeMartini)

Sometime later, the plait, or English braid, gained popularity in early Europe. Women of aristocracy wore elaborate, ornamented braids to signify their status, whereas working women used simpler braids to keep hair clean and contained. The plait is created by weaving three even sections of hair in and out of each other, beginning at the nape of the neck and descending down the back. This method is simple enough to try yourself and comfortable enough for all-day wear.

In early American history, Native Americans wore braids for its practical purpose of containing long hair. Over time, ornate braids became popular for religious rituals and war preparations, and were common in men and women alike.

French braid

By the late 1800s, the French braid was in fashion. At that time, it was considered a “new” style, but in actuality it was discovered by travelers to North Africa. The French braid consists of weaving three strands, like the plait, but unlike the traditional braid, this style begins at the crown of the head. It is considered more elegant than plaiting because it involves a more complex technique, resulting in a more sophisticated appearance. There are also variations, such as Dutch and fishtail braids, that are constructed in a similar manner but consist of weaving the hair sections under, instead of over, creating an inverse braid.

A modern twist on a classic braid: crown-fishtail updo (8makeup)

Today, braids retain their popularity among women (and some men) as a practical and elegant hairstyle. The most basic style of braid today, by far, is the English braid, with Swiss or other wrapped braids as variations. Top (crown-only) and side braids are also in fashion, as often seen worn by celebrities. Aside from their convenience and versatility, another plus is the flowing waves that result the next day.

Have fun trying out different braids on your own or with a friend. And for that special occasion, be sure to make an appointment with Red Market Salon for the ultimate styling experience.

Red Market Hair Salon Miami: Restoring Body and Fullness to your Hair

Almost any woman can find a fault with her hair, or a way in which she wants her hair to improve. For example, many women find their hair to be too fine and thin; perhaps they are even suffering from hair loss. Their locks falls flat without body or bounce. This is especially a problem during the dry winter months, since there is no humidity to give hair its thicker appearance. In addition, hair grows more slowly in the winter. So what can women do for fine or thinning hair? Thankfully, women can restore body and fullness to their hair, it’s only a matter of what hair-care products they use. Red Market Salon in Miami offers Kerastase, a high-quality brand that’s exclusively found in luxury salons. So let’s see what Kerastase offers, and you’ll be one step closer to that full head of hair!

Spećifique Enhances Thinning Hair

Spećifique  is designed for both women who have fine hair, and those who are suffering from thinning hair. Hair loss can be a problem at any age! Spećifique  is a three-step system designed to stop hair loss in its tracks and give each strand definition and body. The treatment system is guaranteed to restore fullness to hair in thirty days. During a trial, 77% percent of users experienced “increased fullness,” 76% of users felt a “thickening effect,” and 70% of users experienced “enhanced density.” According to Kerastase’s website, “The scalp can be prone to temporary or longer lasting imbalances, such as hair thinning due to predisposition, stress or environmental impacts. Spećifique addresses these concerns, leaving you with a well-balanced scalp and hair.” The Spećifique system comes with three separate products, listed below.

Bain Stimuliste GL ($39): This shampoo energizes each strand and is perfect for thinning hair. According to their website, it “revitalizes and gently cleanses the scalp to reduce excess sebum and remove product build up.”

Lotion Densitive GL ($40): This treatment spray is designed to revitalize your hair. By stimulating micro-circulation, this spray adds substance, body, and fullness to your hair. In addition to creating volume, it also soothes the scalp.

Intensive Scalp Treatment ($60): This scalp treatment is intended to be massaged into the hair as the final step in Specifique’s three-step system. As they state on their website, “The intensive scalp treatment contains the highest concentration of Arginine to maintain the hair fiber’s potential of longevity. Combined with a massage application, it stimulated micro-circulation to provide the optimal environment to promote healthy hair.

If you follow all three steps in the Specifique system, you are sure to witness fuller hair with definition and shine. Please stop by Red Market Salon today to pick out these products!
